Word Work

To practice our spelling words on Wednesdays we read a poem that contains words with the spelling patterns we are practicing. Then the kids work with a partner to find and highlight all the words. Most of the class found all 15 words today! Thanks for you hard work at home also! The kids are doing wonderful with their spelling!

Reminder: Friday is an early Release. The kids will be dismissed 2 hours early. If your child is going home from school a different way, please write a note in their agenda. Thanks!

Healthy Blueberry Muffins

Today we made healthy blueberry muffins. We all pitched in with the measuring, stirring, pouring and more! We also wrote about making muffins and used transitional words to show order: first, then, next, last. The recipe will be in your child's folder tonight. Have a great weekend!

Learning about Cotton

Yesterday we visited Mrs. Backey's room to learn about cotton. We read a book about an African American girl who did not get to go to school. She had to work from sun up until sun down in the cotton fields. We really enjoyed getting to see a cotton plant and feel real cotton. We also discussed the way the girl spoke. We learned to not say "my friend and me." Instead we say "my friend and I." The students worked on writing sentences to practice writing and speaking the correct way.

Partners of 10

This week we will be working heavily on the partners (addends) of 10. Today we used cubes to "discover" the partners. We also made this graphic organizer as a class. The kids then worked on their own organizers to help them study the partners of 10.

Tomorrow the kids will be learning this game. We have the fancy mats, but you can play without them at home. The game is played with a deck of cards, in which the face cards are removed and 2 of the game mats. Pick the top 4 cards off the pile and place on the 1-4 spaces. If 2 of the cards are "partners of 10" they can be removed and put to the side. You can fill the empty spaces on the the playing mat with 2 more cards. If you come to a stand-still and can't play. Pick a card to "exchange" for a new one. The exchanged card can go on the bottom of the deck.  At the end of the game count how many pairs you were able to make. The person with the most pairs wins.

Other games you can play are: go fish (ask for the other ten partner) or Ten-partner memory/concentration. I hope  your family enjoys these games that will help your First-grader learn their ten-partners. It's an important skill as we will build on it later in the year with our "make a ten" strategy.

Fire Safety

Today the Wautoma Fire Department visited us to teach us about fire safety. We learned about staying low and out of the smoke and quickly getting out of the burning building. We saw the "scary" mask isn't' that scary. The firefighter is dressed in special gear and they're coming to help us. Your child wrote "fire talk" in their agenda today. Please take a few minutes tonight to discuss escape plans and check your fire alarms

Project: Spider Web Bridges

Last Friday we started a project in which the students needed to plan and create a bridge using only cups, tape, yarn and scissors. We then tested the bridges to see how many cubes could be held. The students than revised their bridge and tested again. We learned a lot about working in groups and being like scientists who plan, test and repeat the process to improve their work. We will do more STEM type projects throughout the year! Here are some pictures!

Last Friday we also watched the Homecoming Parade!

Reminder: This week we are having Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. I'm looking forward to seeing your family on Thursday or Friday.

Tomorrow we will be going to the PAC for a play! I'll post some pictures.

Wednesday the Fire Department will be visiting school to teach us about Fire Safety.

Math Work in Our Green Outfits

Homecoming week has been fun! Today we wore our class color-green! Tomorrow is orange and black day! We will be having a pep rally in the morning and going to the parade in town in the afternoon. I will have a guest teacher until noon. Here we are being silly!

Today we also got introduced to a new math tool-the rekenrek! This tool will help us understand numbers better. Please ask your student about them. Mrs. Backey came in to team teach with me. We will be  using the rekenrek to discover partners (addends) of the numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10, as well as later in the year for more advanced addition and subtraction strategies.

My New Name!

Thank you to everyone for your kind words and congratulations on my marriage. You'll be seeing my new name on paperwork coming home! It's still me :)

Today we worked on +1 and -1 in math class. We related this to one more and one less. Tomorrow we will build on this concept by working with +2 and -2.

This will be the 3rd week your child will be bringing home the reading fluency homework. If you have any feedback on this homework, please email me and let me know how it is going!

There is a conference sign-up sheet coming home tonight. Please have it back by Friday.
