Engineering Fun

Here are some of the building projects we were able to do with the supplies you all sent in. Thank you! Also,  your student is bringing home a BINGO-type activity that is not mandatory homework for break. If you choose to participate, they will get a treat when they bring it back after break. Today I showed the students the Raz-kids website. This is a website and/or app that is full of leveled books to read. Your child has an account that the school has paid for. If you have a device at home like a computer or tablet, your child can access it. First they are to listen to the book, then read the book, then answer questions about the book. They can earn stars as they do this. I wanted to introduce the app to them before break hoping students will use it to practice their daily reading over break. You child will be bringing a note home tonight about this. The note also contains usernames and password. I suggest that you hang it on the fridge or keep it in a safe place.Please comment if you try it out! :)

Authors at Work

We have been working on writing personal narratives for the last two months. Here were my objectives for the students to learn during this unit: 
                    * I chose a small moment to write about
                    * My story has a beginning, middle, and end
                    * I used transition words to tell my story in order
                    * My story has a closing sentence

                    * My story has details
                    * My sentences start with a capital letter
                    * I drew pictures and wrote my words neatly
                    * My sentences have endmarks
                    * I spelled "folder" words correctly
This week students chose their favorite book that they have written and began the publishing process. So far we have revised and edited. We will work on our final copy, illustrating, and an about the author page on Wednesday. When it's finished, the book will be added to the students portfolio. All the stories that they didn't publish, but worked on throughout the unit will be coming home now. Here are some pictures of us peer editing today. 2-Digit Numbers!

We are getting so smart in math! We've started to learn about 2-digit numbers. Here are some pictures of us building 2-digit numbers with cards and beads. We learned that the digits represent how many groups of ten and how many extras are in a given number. By using the cards and the beads, students gain a better understanding of the numbers as a numeral and a quantity. Next we will start to compare 2-digit numbers. We have also been working on "missing partner" story problems. We can use math mountains, circle drawings and/ or equations to solve them.
