Partners of 4 and 5

Today the students used a ten-frame to discover the partners (addends) of 4 and 5. Tomorrow we will review and work on the partner of 6. We will get really fluent at these "facts" before we move onto the partners of 7, 8, 9, 10. First graders are to be fluent to 10 by the end of the year and have some knowledge in facts to 20.

We also played a game to practice the partners of 5. 

We are also working on identifying the vowel letters and making their sounds. We're using this to make CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) like cat, mop, pin, etc. In reading we are learning how to "book shop" using our classroom library and book boxes and slowly building our stamina during read to self time. We are up to 9 minutes of successfully reading without interruption. Our goal is to get to 20 minutes of independent reading practice daily. In writing we've been working on writing sentences with a capital letter in the front, spaces, and an endmark. Today the students even wrote a question!  The students are making some great progress!
