Today we worked on a wedding cake project! The kids designed a cake, wrote about it and we did a math problem to figure out how three tiers of cake could feed 20 people. We also had a cupcake treat! Here are some pictures! I'll have a guest teacher tomorrow!

Today the students used a ten-frame to discover the partners (addends) of 4 and 5. Tomorrow we will review and work on the partner of 6. We will get really fluent at these "facts" before we move onto the partners of 7, 8, 9, 10. First graders are to be fluent to 10 by the end of the year and have some knowledge in facts to 20.
(This ten-frame shows 8. It's from yesterday)
We also played a game to practice the partners of 5.
We are also working on identifying the vowel letters and making their sounds. We're using this to make CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) like cat, mop, pin, etc. In reading we are learning how to "book shop" using our classroom library and book boxes and slowly building our stamina during read to self time. We are up to 9 minutes of successfully reading without interruption. Our goal is to get to 20 minutes of independent reading practice daily. In writing we've been working on writing sentences with a capital letter in the front, spaces, and an endmark. Today the students even wrote a question! The students are making some great progress!
**I will not be at school Friday. There will be a guest teacher. If you need to email me for something that day, please email Mrs. Floeter the school secretary.**

Today we began our Math Boxes! Your child got a math box with a set of numbers it. The numbers were chosen based on an assessment that was given. This way students are working at their own level. The students job is to lay out their numbers in order, say them forwards and backwards and write them. As they master their set of numbers they can move on to greater numbers. Math boxes are an activity we do all year as part of our math class. This gives the students meaningful number sense work while I can pull small groups and teach more differentiated instruction. Here we are trying out Math Boxes for the first time.
For the last few days we have been practicing our handwriting with "small tall and fall" letters. Tall letters touch the top line of our primary writing paper. Small letters should touch the dotted line and fall letters fall below the bottom. We try to make our letters touch the right lines. Here we are doing a song to help us learn about tall small and fall. I also noticed many of the students are unable to completely write their last name. We will be working on this. I encourage you to work on it at home too.

This week we are starting to learn about math stations. Today the students worked with Mrs. Backey and Ms. Hopp on tangrams. Tangrams are a Chinese puzzle consisting of seven pieces that can make a variety of shapes. We read the book Grandfather Tang's Story , made our own paper tangrams and worked together to create some puzzles. Later this week we will also learn about "math boxes" and a math game. These activities will also become math stations. The purpose of math stations is to give the students meaningful work while the teacher works with small groups of students to meet students' individual needs better. Here's some pictures!

Here's this months lunch menu!
We've had a great few first days! Here we are working on a writing project. We've been reviewing the correct ways to use all of our supplies and practicing routines like lining up, sitting on the carpet, and morning jobs.
Please remember to send socks if your student is wearing sandals. We need them to wear our gym shoes. Thanks!
