We've been packing everyday with so much learning. This is an exciting time of year for me. I'm seeing so much progress with our kiddos. They amaze me with their reading, writing, and strategy use in math. I hope you've also noticed this growth at home. Thank you for completing homework.
Here's what we worked on this week:
* Reading: flip the sound. Some letters/chunks make different sounds. If we come to a tricky word we should try the different sounds. For example, funny. Will the y make the consonant sound for y, or pretend to be a vowel (i or e)
*Reading: Using Non-fiction text features (table of contents, glossary, index, photographs, captions, bold words) to help us understand the author's message.
*Writing: We've been reading non-fiction mentor texts and writing down facts we are learning.
* Math: story problems involving missing partners or totals (and knowing the difference). We've also been working on strategies for solving equations. Here's one from the Math Expressions Series and Common Core:
In a teen addition problem such as 9 + 5, children break apart
the lesser number to make a ten with the greater number.
Because 9 + 1 = 10, they break apart 5 into 1 + 4. Then they add
the extra 4 onto 10 to find the total. A similar method is used to
find unknown partners with teen totals. Children look for ways to
make a ten because it is easier to add onto 10.
We've also started to use this to help us subtract. For example:
I can think, 8+__=14
8 and 2 gets me to ten and 4 more gets me to 14. I added 2 and 4. I added 6. The missing partner is 6.
For students who are having a hard time with this, they simply count on to find the missing partner. Starting with 8 they use their fingers to count up to 14. The goal is to have students eventually use these strategies mentally and be very efficient and solving equations.
*Science: We've been learning about the Sun, stars, day and night, constellations, and the seasons.
Additional Information: There will be a guest teacher in our room Monday morning, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. Friday is Pop with a Cop. And, next week is a full week of school. The following week is only 3 days for the students.
